5 Common Surface Finishes for Leather Hardware (and How to Choose)

Hardware finishing is one of the most overlooked details in leather goods design—yet it directly affects the perceived value, durability, and even the unit price of the final product. Below are the 5 most common surface finishes we work with, plus when each one makes sense.

1. Mirror Polish
A highly reflective, glossy finish achieved through precision polishing. Ideal for luxury brands seeking a clean, jewelry-like aesthetic. Drawback: shows fingerprints and micro-scratches.

2. Brushed / Satin
A matte finish with subtle directional grain. More forgiving than mirror polish—hides daily wear well. Increasingly popular among contemporary brands.

3. PVD Coating
A vacuum-deposited coating that bonds at the molecular level. Available in gold, rose gold, gunmetal, and black. Excellent durability—maintains color for 5+ years under normal use. Higher cost.

4. Antique / Vintage
Intentional aging treatments that give hardware a worn, patina-like appearance. Perfect for heritage and artisan brands.

5. Galvanized Plating
The most cost-effective option, available in many colors. Quality varies significantly between suppliers—color durability is shorter than PVD.

Which finish should you choose?
Budget-friendly + variety: galvanized plating
Long-lasting + premium: PVD
Luxury + jewelry-like: mirror polish
Modern + practical: brushed
Heritage character: antique
